I just read on the Comic Book Database site the first appearance of The Goon was in 1998 in the comic Dreamwalker #0. Anyone know if this is right? I've followed The Goon for a while and this is the first I've heard of this issue. I want to make sure this is correct before I spend an ungodly amount of time, money and energy looking for the damn thing.

If this is right, I think this should be reprinted in the Goon Volume 0 trade, right? Maybe if you check the copyright info or front matter in that book, you can get an answer. Or, if you're in it for the reading and not the collecting, just get the trade. Sorry if I'm telling you wrong, and this is some untraded proto-appearance, my copy is not handy.

Maybe. I'll have to check. I'm afraid I'm in it for the collecting. I've cut back on a lot of my comic buying and The Goon stuff is the only thing I'm collecting on a hardcore basis.

Hmm, you're right, Comicbookdb doesn't have this appearance in the Vol.0 trade. I can't offer any more info, so I'll have to defer until a more hardcore fan pokes their head in. Always good to see someone else reading The Goon, though!

Ask Eric on his message board, if anyone knows the answer it should be the man himself.

I saw this whole scene somewhere.

if anything would make me buy this comic, this is it. I'll definitely be looking for it in the near future.
Hal Jordan is the OJ Simpson of the DC Universe, and I, apparently am the Norm MacDonald.

I used to collect DreamWalker.

I might actually have that issue (perhaps even multiple copies).
If I do, the comic(s) is/are in long-term storage, so it may be a while before I can confirm that.

I checked.
I do have the issue, but only one copy of it.

The issue does include a Goon backup story.

Let me try to add some clarity to this if I can ... since I was the editor of both titles at the time. Yes, the very first printed appearance of the Goon was in a 1 page backup story in DreamWalker #0 by Jenni Gregory. I know because I'm the one who put it there. The same 1 page story ran in Avatar Illustrated but DreamWalker #0 was out first. Avatar Illustrated did have an earlier release date than DreamWalker #0, but it was late shipping and DreamWalker #0 actually came out before it.

DreamWalker #0 had only a 3,000 copy print run. Jenni and I each have a couple of personal copies, but the rest of the run sold out years and years ago. Finding one would be, I think, a major achievement.

The copy of DreamWalker #0 that is available at IndyPlanet.com is a digital reprint and NOT a first printing. It does NOT contain the 1 page Goon story -- though it IS an absolutely terrific comic.

Barry.
I have that issue.
I don't doubt that you put it there, but either your math or your memory is a bit off (I suspect the later).
The story is 4 pages not 1. In addition to the four page story, there's a fifth page featuring an advertisement for Eric Powell's Goon, which reads "In March 1999, Avatar Press unleashes the Goon. Don't claim we didn't warn you."

i have now 5 copies of the book and its 4 page complete story was reprinted in the goon #1 as the 3rd story! i talked to someone at avatar because the ex owner of my store was writing for them and avatar ill. 1998 was put out after dreamwalker #0 because it was extremly late ! But that does not matter avatar ill. 1998 is only ads not story and that is what makes a first app. of a charactor. per ALL price guides. If not then the first crow is really moontrap #1 with the 1st ad not caliber presents #1, the first dawn is contiium #1 not cry for dawn and hellboy 1st is dime 4 press not san diego comic con . all writers say they are all not the frist app. so i think we got to go with this RIGHT ? I just found out the first harley quinn is in batman adventures #12 , i thought it was mad love ! I know from talking to eric powell about this that he didnt know avatar did this printing of the book . So he is not happy with them at all !
