I have not placed anything on Comic Sketch Gallery yet (because I gotta learn how wink.gif ). First up is my prized possession of the con, not a commission but actually it will be the cover to the Top Shelf Summer sampler by Jeff Lemire...

Next is an original Alex Maleev commission of Doctor Strange. I began asking for Dr. Strange commissions only because he is one of the few characters in all of comics that not only has a very distinctive look (Thank you Mr. Ditko smile.gif ) but also can be portrayed in many ways depending on the artist's mood (dark and moody, magical whimsey, or stoic and all knowing). For what it's worth, though this is absolutely Maleev-ish, I was a bit disappointed with this one (you'll see why as you scroll down). I kinda feel like this is phoned in.

When I bought the Lemire cover, the man was nice enough to throw in a Dr. Strange commission for free (you gotta check out his website to see his cape and tights illustrations. They are awesome!). I gotta say I love Lemire!

Next is an up and coming artist who is known as Daniel Bradford. He was doing $7 full body commissions. I couldn't resist.

The next piece of art work is done by an artist who's name I can not remember (help me here Wood). Charlito from Indy Sinner Rack pointed him out to us. He was selling previously finished pieces for $5 each (including this one). He just signed an exclusive (I think with DC, once again HELP me Wood! smile.gif ).

Easily one of my most sought after commissions was that of Paolo Rivera (the gentleman who illustrates the Marvel Mythos series). It is my sole goal to get a series of headshot commissions from this guy. Friggin phenominal stuff! I owe Chris Neeseman from Around Comics a HUGE thanks for helping me get this prize. I owe him BIG!!!!!

I hope you guys enjoyed these as much as I do. I'm off to the store to buy a frame for the Lemire and Rivera pieces now. thumbsup_anim.gif

AWESOME SAUCE TIKI, AWESOME SAUCE!

As to your question...the artist in question is Sean Murphy and, yes, he just signed an exclusive with DC after having done some work on a few indies and more recently some Marvel Adventures stuff.

Here is his website: http://www.seangordonmurphy.com/

Unfortunately Sean wasn't doing sketches at NYCC b/c he was celebrating his exclusive and just wanted to chill, but he had a page of the Avengers that I friggin LOVED and said it wouldn't be for sale until it was printed (in Marvel Adventures Avegers) in the next month or two.

I KNEW you'd remember!!! He also had a kick ass Mr. Freeze that I would have bought in a heartbeat! Unfortunately it was a scanned copy of an original he did in the past (it was for his own collection).

The beautiful thing about INDY artists is that you can pick up full color covers at a very affordable price!

That last Strange is awesome but nothing beats that piece by Lemire.

I second the "Off Road" recommendation.

I am not really disappointed with it as much as I really dug the vibe of other artists that I met. I'm not bad mouthing Mr. Maleev, he was a commission machine. I think I just enjoyed the conversations I had with so many other illustrators and I think it skewed my opinion. Does that make sense?

Patrick Godfrey (of Velocity Comics and Oddgod Press) and I were just talking about Sean Murphy yesterday. It seemed an original by him was one of the few things Patrick bought from the con as well. Sean does some nice stuff... and like everyone has said, the Off Road is a good read.

Love the Lamire cover. That's pretty freakin' sweet!

And Paulo... You mean Mr. Superior, right?

He was the model for RK Johnson's Superior story in Project: Superior. Kicked major butt. This is the two of us at an SDCC a few years back.

The man was a sweetheart and look at the guns he's sporting in that pic! HA!

Alex has a very cold/ standoffish demeanor. I actually attended Joe Kubert With Alex and he was always like that. Not saying hes a bad guy or anything its just the way he is. We chatted for awhile and I had to ask about the Dave Mack thing. He was less than impressed to say the least.

All my sketches I got of my characters from CONTRACT and almost everyone said that it was cool if I put the sketches in the back of the issues.

Sean Murphy is one of my all time favourite artists. I own 2 original pages of 'Off Road' and i'm going to get some more as soon as i can afford it.

Wow,

I feel so behind the times on Sean Murphy's Off Road that it's embarrassing! I'm searching it out immediately!

Great haul, Tiki!! And I think the Maleev pic is decent as well. Good point about Dr. Strange, too. I forget if you're a Cerebus fan, but here's a really funny commission that Dave Sim did a while ago:

Those are some gorgeous Doc Stranges!

That must've been this year's secret NYCC theme, because although I wasn't there, my amigo David Brothers of 4th Letter fame was at the con and dropped me this text asking who my favorite characters in comics are... and got Tiny Titans artist Art Baltazar to do them for me!

Check 'em out:
