Isotope is my LCS and I count myself lucky to also call James a friend. Please visit his shop when you are in SF and see a comic shop DONE RIGHT! Rock on James, Stacey and I love you!

Is it really the case that retailers who use the diamond p-o-s (or will, when it is released) have to agree to an EULA which allows Diamond to gather certain store specific information as sellthrough, stocks ect.?

Sounds awful to me...very 1984ish

I heartily agree! It's a fantastic store. My wife and I visited while we were in town on our honeymoon, and we both fell in love with the store (pictures here).

In fact it's a must visit on my upcoming return to the City by the Bay in early January (heck, I even put an order in already!).

Very interesting stuff talking about Countdown and crossovers. I had always known that crossovers were a way for publishers to get fewer people to buy more books. I never had thought about the risk of a crossover event being bad creating a situation where people drop books across the board.

Also, I just want to say a hells yeah. At least someone agrees with me that it is not evil to wait for the trade. The trade will still come out even if I do not buy the issues.

EDIT: OMG, I just bought and read Project X: Cup Noodle. It is indeed awesome. I also read Project X: Nissan Fairlady Z, which is not as good. I'm going to read Project X: Seven Eleven tonight. These are the kinds of comics that people really need to pay attention to. Comics about the history of a business, seriously!

Haven't heard the episode yet... but this POS sounds good! Knowing that sellthrough information is important for the industry to REALLY know what's selling and what is landing in the discount bins.

Yup, James Sime, not Dave (Dave Sim is the Cerebus creator, of course!)
And getting him on has been long overdue.
Here's my pictures from the Ed Brubaker signing at the Isotope from back in May....

It's good to know that some comic shops are going out of the box to attract more readers. I love the lounge/coffee shop model. This can build a stronger comics community because you can sit down with other customers and discuss what you are reading rather than just bumping into other people by the racks. I love my LCS's, but there's really no congregating unless you are into gaming.

I also agree with Sime's point of targeting female shoppers. With most of my friends and families, the women are the one's who ususally do the Christmas/Holiday/Birthday shopping. The presentation of the store itself can generate a lot more sales because if you can attract them into the comic store, they are going to spread the word if they are impressed and get more customers to come in.

True Story: I was listening to this episode here at work when I came across a database problem. I was so interested in the podcast that I totally zoned out of what I was doing, and when I snapped back to attention, the problem had been solved. I have no idea how I did it, and I was unable to duplicate the results, but the solution was the right one. Thanks, James, for doing my homework.

Indeed! James actually convinced me to stick with reading Y The Last Man in trade, when I told him that I was tempted to break the trend and buy the last six issues as they came out. Considering that 3 of them sat on the shelf in front of me, he could have gone for the easy sale, but instead stuck by the value of the reading experience.

Sounds like a great comic shop - if I could get a beer, hang out and read comics - wow! The man should franchise.

Ordered Project X seven eleven last week and ordered Cup of Noodle a few seconds after I heard him talk about it on your podcast. Looking forward to them.

Anyone else read the Skyscrapers book he was talking about? What's it about?

Great episode, as always! Thanks.

I agree Diamond should not know everything.

THRILLED to hear that he devotes a nice chunk of store space to minicomics. James is definitely not your typical comic shop owner. I wish more stores would follow suit. thumbsup_anim.gif

Really enjoying the interview so far. I love the Talking Shop segments and Sime is a great guest. He also gave an informative interview about being an Eisner judge on Kryptographik Episode 12.

Great interview, a great store. I went there this past WonderCon and loved it. To bad I don't live in SF. I live about 40 minutes away.

Enjoyed the interview and really love the Talking Shop segments. Good job, geeks!

Bry- I agree. How hard is it to put up a fresh coat of paint, and oh, I don't know, maybe dust once in a while..? I can understand getting second hand racks and fixtures- those things are 'spensive! I had a retail airbrush/t-shirt shop and would find many cool racks/displays when other stores remodeled or closed. I would clean them up and re-paint them to match the color scheme of my store. I also made a lot of displays out of masonite, PVC, plywood, slatwall, and even papier mache'. Doesn't cost much to get creative.

I'd love to own a comic shop, and hope to have one someday- I want a two or three story building with a shop/comic gallery downstairs with a couple rooms for classes, meetings, and studio space, and living space upstairs. I've got plenty of artist friends here that I could show their work, as well as the comics we all do. Just don't think Memphis could/would support another shop right now, and I'd hate to compete with the two here. They've both been in business for a long time now.
