ToonSeum is one of the coolest places in Pittsburgh and I heartily recommend a visit. For Joe, Jim, Steph and everybody involved the ToonSeum its a labor of love and it shows. I can't wait for the new Akira show and there are rumors of a Kirby show later this year...And as their official caterer and Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School partner, I put my money where my mouth is!
My highlight was the Old School Marvel panel (which I cannot find a recording of online anywhere which is too bad) with Joe Sinnott(who drew TWO awesome sketches for Dave Wachter), Ernie Chan and Roy Thomas. They went on for two hours with stories about John Byrne's first work at Marvel, Neal Adams and the XMen/The Kree Skrull War, why inking Gene Colan gave JS "lead-poisoning", etc. etc. It was fascinating stuff and a drawing-back of the curtain on some of the best of the late Silver Age/Bronze Age.

I would love to see the Pittsburgh Con get put in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center right in downtown. I think it would be a lot easier for people to travel to and it's got tons of space.

Agreed, the Toonseum is great and a strong supporter of local artists. I love the Dr. Sketchy events, especially the locale!
I wish I had been to that panel, but at least I got a fantastic experience meeting Joe afterward!

We speculated about putting the con actually IN Pittsburgh back when they said they were changing venues. I imagine it's more costly but I would be interested in being in the city if it were to happen.

I actually prefer being in Monroeville. It's easier to get to, no crazy driving problems like in the city, cheaper, and everyone hangs out at the same place. Once it's in the city everyone scatters to the four winds.

That sounds good on paper, but I'm not sure if that would work in Pittsburgh.
I'm not a local, but I've spent a decent amount of time there.
There's really no public transit other than buses. So everyone would have to drive. People live scattered all over the area so pretty much everyone would have to drive. That would be a bit of a nightmare. Parking sucks. I'm not sure where the convention center is and how that relates to "cool" parts of town. Perhaps some locals can fill us in?

I don't want to give too much away prematurely, but there are major parties interested in moving the Pgh. Comicon to where it should be; Pittsburgh. As a local business owner I am with them.
The DL Lawrence Convention Center is much bigger than the Monroeville facility, which I think would address the problems that the Geeks referred to in as far as they were separated from the main con floor. The DLLCC is about the size if not bigger than where they hold the Baltimore Comic Con,it would be a million times easier for Pgh. groups who would benefit from the Comicon's exposure (ToonSeum, POTA, Eides, etc.) and it would be a true Pgh. Con, not a Monroeville con like Pgh. Comicon now or Steel City Con.
Thanks for the kind words and even if you don't come back to Pgh. Comicon next year I hope to see everyone again soon.

There is a ton of parking at the Convention Center downtown. There are also a few hotels adjacent to the DLLCC but there are cheapy motels a quick ten minutes from there on the Parkway. Downtown is five-ten minutes from SouthSide Oakland and other cool parts of town.

I live literally a half hour away and I don't even like to go to the Pittsburgh con anymore and I am a HUGE comic fan. That should tell you something.
I loved the Steel City Con, but now that's being held in the new Convention Center and...still in Monroeville.
I plan to attend a Steel City Con at some point, as I am mostly about shopping. To me a good shopping show starts at the door. And forking down $18 just to get into the thing isn't a good shopping show.
I might be spoiled that my LCS (http://www.ndcomics.com/) is one in a chain of stores and it kicks absolute ass and can pretty much get whatever you want and has a plethora of 25 cent and dollar sales throughout the year. And you don't even have to fork down any money to get in to them.

I do agree that Steel City is usually a good shopping con; I have found a bunch of great stuff there at great prices.
I just wish that the Pgh. Comicon would kinda get its shit together and become more of an event, or get out of the way and let someone else do it. Pgh. is a geeky city and we deserve a con worthy of that.A number of local artists that i know have given up on Pgh Comicon because they have been priced out of getting floor space. There are a ton of local creators and Pgh Comicon should be working with them not pricing them out of teir own hometown con.
New Dimension always brings the quarter and dollar bin goodness.
Love your avatar. Ostrander is one of the unrecognized geniuses of the medium, and GrimJack kicked much ass.
