Hey guys another great show.

I gotta say i'm one of the lucky ones to get this in singles at cover price

Adam you will see amelia does return to continue her story

Jamie i can understand your disagreements about the fourth issue but i think one re read you will find that issue more important to the overall plot and there is a reason its in the first arc

I also agree with you Jamie that the lose of mason may leave a gap in the chew cop parntership but i think the replacement has grown to become my favorite character in the series

oh Congrats on the New Family Member Jamie!!! laugh.gif

Thank you sir, I have read 6 thru 8 since the interview and I have enjoyed it a little more and do see some meaning in the 4th issue, especially after reading the translation of the Russian Dialogue, still a faux paus in my opininon of not having a translation in the floppies. I definately will keep getting this book

Re: the digression at the end

And for those who want to spite Valentine's Day, and if you aren't one of those Communist families that doesn't have cable (sorry Bryan, couldn't resist) you can counter-program that night with my wife's show for Discovery Channel, Tyrannosaurous Sex. At 10pm Valentine's Day night. It even has a TV-MA rating. For animated dinosaur sex. Eh?

TV-MA (S)

Tyrannosaurus Sex is a groundbreaking new special that investigates dinosaur reproduction. Interviews with a new breed of scientists called paleobiologists along with ground-breaking CGI bring new life to one of the last mysteries of these great beasts.

Great show, guys, and it as cool to hear Layman on the show. Great to hear that he has longterm plans for the book, and that the early success is going to make those plans possible. That is how things should work on a quality book with a new premise, but it is too rarely the case that things get to work out that way.

I sent an audio comment that didn't make the cut (oh well), but my take on Chew was that, after so much buzz and hype that made me nervous the book wouldn't live up to expectations, I was happily surprised that it did. I love the originality of the premise, and instead of just being a cop with strange powers doing usual cop things (as per rubbish network tv shows about psychic cops and cops that talk to ghosts or angels or whatever) I loved the way that they have the world of the story be about food. Food crimes. Food conspiracies. Food enemies, etc. Like having Hellboy or Proof belong to organizations that hunt down demons or monsters, the fact that Chu is made a member of a special branch of the FDA is hilarious. And I like the world of the story is one that has all sorts of criminal and political issues surrounding food. I also think food is a really relatable thing, that, despite being such a part of life, actually gets very little screen time in most comics. So I think this is an idea with a lot of potential.

I also like how packed these issues were with event. It reminded me of the density of the storytelling in Casanova that way. A lot of things were introduced in these first 5 (5? I forget) issues, they did a lot of worldbuilding and gave themselves a lot of places to go in the future.

I loved the art, and agree that, if the style was photorealistic or more dark fantasy looking, the book would probably be too gross. By the expressive style and design made it properly icky without crossing the line into disgusting.

All in all, I thought it was great stuff, and look forward to the next volume. I would give it 4.5

I emailed an MP3 to the main CGS address around 12 noon this past Sunday. I may have cut it too close for a Monday recording. No big deal.

I hear only good things about this series but did not get in on the ground floor.I do not purchase TPB's so I'm hoping this will eventually come out in hardcovers.
As always it's great to hear creators talk about their "babies".

You don't buy trades, but you do buy hardcovers?

I'm not sure if it has been explained yet, but has the Vampire been revealed? My prediction is the Vampire is the 3rd known Cibopathic.

I do not like trade paperbacks and own only one,I think the hardcovers are so much better and it's also another way to make sure to only purchase what I really want.

Another great episode guys. It was a real nice treat to have the author in on the discussion. I think this is where your book of the month episodes are bar none, the best out there. Also, while I don't always agree with all of your criticisms, its nice to see that sometimes there are conflicting viewpoints and those conflicting views are always respected by the rest of the gang.

Jamie- The Russian did not bother me, but I read it in trade, so I had the translation there when I finished the book. It kind of reminded me of the old Alan Moore issue of Swamp Thing (#57) where a lot of the dialog was in Randian (?). That pissed the hell out of my friend Denis. I on the other hand was not bothered. Like Bryan (was it Bryan?) said, it projected a feeling of alienation to the reading audience.
I do agree with you that it was a mis-step to not include the translation in the issue of Chew. I imagine that John Layman realized this mistake and corrected it upon the printing of the TPB.

Thanks again for all of the hard work that you guys put into your podcasts.

I haven't read the BOMC yet, but I had to respond to the ultimate wisdom and smarts the CGS guys were saying about Valentine's Day.

I TOTALLY agree and think its a waste of money and shows how truly one does love another when you gotta be told when to get flowers/gifts for them. (I also feel the same for Christmas, but I digress) Complete commercialism and just another way to waste money that could be better spent buying comics. Now, if ya disagree w/that, fine. Just had to chime in with what I heard to be one of the smartest thing I've heard on a CGS epsiode.

To add to the V-Day responses...yes I see it as a way to jack up the prices of flowers and dinners and whatnots. I am, however, taking my fiancee out for a dinner, sending her flowers, and got her a gift that she wanted. I look at V-Day as a definitive date-night. We don't always get to go out for a nice dinner and spend a night out together because of life (work schedules, recordings, money, etc).

I don't see this as a day I need to tell her how much I feel about her (we text '143' to each other at least once a day). I think the people who see it as that kind of day need to reaccess how much he/she tells the other person on a normal basis. Plus, I get Meg flowers 'just because' on occasion, so looking at this day as THE day doesn't really apply.

Not trying to Trump anyone, but just wanted to provide a voice from the other side. Besides, does this day get a bad rap because of the scorned, lonely single people? Why do we have parties for new year? What about to wear green and get drunk (don't we do that at every holiday?) Why a President's Day (does he get enough perks?) Why a Labor Day (there are still people who work on that day)? I think we could look at all the holidays and question why.

M.

On Chew Volume 1, I do think this is one of the best independent books to come out in a long time. When people say that we should support independent books this an example why. It is a unique book in such a crowded market. It isn't another zombie, crime, or super-hero book that we seen a thousand times already. What I like about the first five issues was that even though it was a story arc, each "chapter" had a full story, with a beginning, middle, and end. It was written to be read both as a monthly series and trade. I found the art inside the book to be amazing and fit the story that Layman was telling. The only weakness to the book was the early covers, which didn't grab me when I saw the comics on the rack. I only picked up the trade because of the buzz. I am now picking up the issues as they come out.

On V-Day, I tend to agree with Bry with his thoughts on it. However, as with Matt, I take it as date night for my wife. Sometimes we do go out on V-Day or if V-Day is on a weekday, the weekend prior. I have two girls, one is almost 9 and the other is 6 1/2. So now, I take all of my women out for a special lunch or dinner around V-Day. I tend not to go overboard because my wedding anniversary is just three weeks later.
