It was my understanding that the Muppets were a little like the Marvel deal. There were other agreements out there with the Muppets property. These finally ended last year (I believe), so now Disney has full control of the Muppets. Which is why you see them being used for this year's Disney Parks campaign.

At the time the deal went down it was all a little confusing. I know the people I dealt with at SPHE at the time were really unsure about what Henson properties they had had actually gone to Disney.

The biggest shock of the episode Disney buying DC & I was like What the flying F*CK! Otherwise a heavy Marvel focused episode. I bought JLA/JSA Virtue & Vice on your recommendation Bryan & really REALLY enjoyed it from an earlier podcast. And can someone give me the Asterios Polyp money back or trade guarantee?

Maybe a big part of having two JLA books is because they are appearing on Smallville in a two part series soon. Just a guess.

Some people like buying the monthlies & w/o monthlies there is no trades.

They like eating & getting paid on a regular basis.

Not if they heard about DCBS or IST.

nevermind... he just explained it...

bookstores get insane discounts when they buy their books from the publisher... discounts that comic book stores dont get... hence they cannot compete...

sounds like floppies, toys, and pokemon cards and hosting pokemon tournaments are the only way a comic book store can survive!!!

Man, he has a good take on these issues. Regarding the title 'franchise' concept; the one thing that's really turning me off of Marvel is the way they have spread their titles over 2 or 4 different books. How many X titles are there? Where would I start? Avengers? Same thing. And Hulks ... what the hell is a Red hulk? he has a son? War of Hulks? Hulk World? Huh? Why are there twelve spider-mans? What happened to just Hulk. Banner is pissed of and ..."Hulk Smash!"?

DC has been quite a bit more accessible. If you can ignore most of the faux crossover titles most of the lines stand out as a single title.

But hell, Hitler pretty much sums it up for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8KbNag962A

After only a few months of reading comics, I've almost reached the conclusion that picking up the occasional independent title is probably the best thing to do. Save money, less confusion and less heartache.

I blame the editors. My quick two year overview of the DC world has left me with the overwhelming impression that Dan Didio doesn't really do anything except let his writers walk all over him; and neither to the other editors (proof read much?). It also seems they just shoot themselves in the foot by rushing everything to trade format. It pretty much makes the floppies moot.

No Peter on this ep? Hmmm, he worships at the altar of Hibbs. I'm surprised y'all didn't schedule this one when Peter was available.

Great episode. I'd be interested in his take on trade paperbacks versus hardcovers, and how they sell. I feel like I've heard alot of stories that hardcovers just don't move that quickly. I try to buy stuff that I really enjoy and may reread several times, and as a result, I like hardcovers. Plus they just look nicer. If and when digital comics pick up in a big way, I wonder if that will help hardcover sales in relation to tpb sales.

Just went to Big Planet Comics 50% Hardcover Sale this weekend. Nice.

Chris

Fixed! zyfingerdance.gif

And I'm too busy these days to hold off on eps that deserve immediate attention.

I was surprised to hear that manga sales have gone down. I wonder if reading in the store also effects that.

Personally, I am picking up the Batwoman hardcover because an Absolute would be too costly and take too long. The hardcovers are really helpful for when I want to show my english teachers that comics are real literature too. I handed my professor a Wonder Woman hardcover and she said "Wow, this is actually a really nice looking book!". It was easier for her to get the whole story and see it as something valuable instead of a pile of floppies.

I'd argue that DC has quite a lost of franchise titles as well. Just look at how many Batman books there are.

No. They are all switching to the Deadpool bandwagon.

I recommend Graphic Novels: Everything You Need to Know by Paul Gravett if you need to convince people to take things seriously. It certainly helped get me to read much more than just Watchmen.

Yes. I'd agree with that. Lucky we have Batwoman and Batgirl to counter that.

Comic book stores deal with the direct market, Take a look at the numbers, Floppies still greatly out sell the number of trades, Why would they stop selling what sells, plus floppies bring people into the stores and alot of the floppie readers also buy trades why piss them off by going all trade and then lose a large section of your trade buyer

JSA splitting in two might also be from the fact that the creators pitched it, at the time it was pitched JSA was the second best-selling team book at DC, and DC is trying to expand their shelf presence.
