Overall though, not very optimistic about this.

A reboot should be generational. It shouldn't happen until your prime demographic has no memory of the last reboot.

This is great news because..
You can go younger. get a 17 or 18 year old....Not a man almost 40.
Revolving directors ala Harry Potter will keep things fresh.
PREDICTION : These Spiderman movies will be looked at like Burton's Batman films years from now...cool, but NOTHING compared to what will have come after.

Prior to Iron Man and Hulk, the Spidey movies were by far my favorite of the Marvel films, but having seen what can Marvel can do on its own I was really hoping they would get control back (still keeping my fingers crossed that'll happen for FF and X-Men).
I'm ready for a new vision for the character, I just hope its a good one.

About the same time gap as the Hulk movies and that worked. OK, it worked for ME anyway.
And like someone else has said, Batman Returns to Forever was a reboot.
Personally I love Raimi but I've seen 3 of his Spidey films now. I'd rather him go do some fun projects of his own and give someone else a shot.
Plus a reboot means we might get a Green Goblin that isnt a Power Ranger or a Venom thats actually bigger than Spider-man.
And of course not forgetting that for the main target audience (thats young kids, not us old comic bastards) the gap of four years is HUGE

And has everyone forgotten that SM3 made almost $900 million?

Honestly, neither Sony or Raimi fill me with confidence. As much as I liked the first two films, the third one was not only a disappointment, but watching it amplified, for me anyway, what didn't work for me in the first two. I'm not sure a fourth film in that series was going to turn things around for me.
And like others have said, when I saw the first film, I was stunned by how fast they flew through the high school years. That felt like a lot of story ideas thrown out the window.
If I had to choose, though, I think I'd still lean toward letting Raimi do at least one or two more. Ending on that third film doesn't feel right.
