The 2010 Movie Thread

I've been seeing a whole bunch of movies lately: Up in the Air, Avatar, and then finally caught up on older ones like Stepbrothers, Burn After Reading, and District 9.

Stepbrothers - I can't believe it took me that long to see it. The John C Reily pairing with Will Ferrel was perfect. Such a dumb movie, but I could stop laughing when Will Ferrel was playing the drums with his sack. And the scene at the end where they beat up the neighborhood kids was priceless.

Burn After Reading - I haven't seen a Coen brothers movie in a while, but I really liked this. The cast was just really memorable (really liked the job Brad Pitt did). A bit of an abrupt ending, but still enjoyed it nonetheless

Burn After Reading was surprisingly good. Well, it was the Coen Brothers, so it wasn't that surprising. My wife and I knew so little about it when we started watching it that we didn't know where the plot was going. Brad Pitt was very good.

We still haven't seen Up in the Air, but I really want to. I've only heard good things about it.

I absolutely loved Sherlock Holmes. It was such a fun film to watch as I came to it with no real expectations and found myself enjoying it immensely.

Just to give you a quick peek into my viewing habits, I'll share what's currently by my TV. I've got four movies out from the library. The Hangover, District 9, Extract, and the Matt LeBlanc vehicle Ed. Yeah. The one with the ape. Who plays baseball.

Haha, what got you to rent Ed? I really want to see The Hangover again. Almost did, but then we made (the better) decision to watch District 9 for the first time. Haven't heard of Extract.

I didn't really have any interest in Sherlock Holmes. Then I heard the good stuff about it and I learned that Guy Ritchie was behind it. Not the hugest Ritchie fan (loved Snatch), but I just think that's an interesting project for him to tackle.

Ed came from the library so it was free, which was a good start. Plus, I read this AV Club article: http://www.avclub.com/articles/ed,36397/ I've found that there's a certain mystique to films that everyone deems to be terrible. "It can't be that bad," I thought to myself as I put it on my request list. Spoiler: It is.

Extract is the latest film by Mike Judge, the guy who did Office Space, amongst other things. It came and went from theaters rather quickly but I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Maybe it was just the mood I was in when I saw it, but Holmes was pure fun for me. The sound design and music choices were excellent, it had a number of references for the knowledgeable Holmes fan (Mycroft Holmes gets a name-drop but not an appearance), and the casting was great. The plot worked well enough. Highly recommended.

Extract sounds like it would be an action thriller.

The $1 theater has a nice little rotation of movies playing at the moment.
-Where the Wild Things Are
-Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
-Fantastic Mr. Fox
- and *ahem* Couples Retreat

I hope to possibly catch the first three over the next few weeks. (and might end up getting roped into seeing the fourth at some point too.)

Also, the other day, He’s Just Not That Into You was on TV, so we started watching it over dinner. I didn’t make it all the way through, but I have to say that they snatched up a pretty big list of stars for that movie (Ben Affleck, Jennifer Anniston, Jennifer Connelly, Bradley Cooper, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johanson, Justin Long, probably others I can’t recall)

Couples Retreat is actually good. Definitely worth a dollar.

I'm actually surprised. Good to know. Seemed like a "good cast but not funny" thing.

The wife and I are going to catch Fantastic Mr. Fox tonight. Like I mentioned on Twitter, I'm not really a Wes Anderson fan, even though I would think I would be. Rushmore was ok, but I found Tenebaums and Zizzou really boring at times. Maybe he's just not my thing. But I think this seems like such a different project that I'm curious to see how it is

I'm hit-n-miss with Wes Anderson. Royal Tenenbaums is pretentious, boring crap, I loved the Life Aquatic, and Darjeeling Limited was decent. I have no interest in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Really doesn't seem like it's my bag.

With Couples Retreat, don't go in expecting the next Old School or anything. It's a solid enough comedy, but it's not clutching-your-sides funny.

Like I gushed on twitter, Fantastic Mr. Fox was awesome. Having just gotten a Blu-Ray player, I can't wait to see it again when it comes out on disc.

So, I never did my Top 5 movies episode. A lot of it b/c I saw more movies after year-end. But now fairly caught up, here's how mine would play out.

1. Up - I watched it again last night and I am basically physically conditioned to cry at two points in the movie.
2. Up in the Air - Oddly heartfelt and depressing at the same time. The entire cast was great
3. Fantastic Mr. Fox - The only Wes Anderson movie I liked. And that's saying a lot
4. The Hangover - I haven't laughed that hard in the theater in a LONG time.
5. (500) Days of Summer - It's like the perfect chick flick from the guy's perspective

Worst: Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

1. Sherlock Holmes
2. Up
3. The Messenger
4. Star Trek
5. Inglorious Basterds
6. Where the Wild Things Are

Worst: GI Joe

I haven't seen The Road or Up in the Air yet, and both of those look like they're capable of knocking one of those bottom 3 out.

I've heard good stuff about The Road, but I've also heard it's incredibly bleak.

Amazon had some good Blu-Ray sales going on last week, so I picked up Inglorious Basterds (haven't seen) and Star Trek (Want to see again b/c I fell asleep the first time)

The Road is brilliant, but yes, it's incredibly bleak. Possibly the most depressing movie since Schindler's List. And like Schindler's List, I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

The Road is at my near by 1 dollar. I'm hoping to catch it before it leaves. Looking forward to it.

So it was a long week at work, so I decided to maximize my weekend, by watching movies. So I saw Iron Man twice (loved it!) and Inglorious Basterds. I haven't liked a Tarentino movie that much in a while, but I was completely floored by this movie. If I could redo my year-end movie list, I would bump it up to #2, ahead of Up In the Air.

I still have not seen Inglorious Basterds, but we did watch Moon this weekend. I read a review that called it a great 'hard sci-fi film' which I totally agree. It was fairly low tech (most of the vehicles were models, not CGI) and the emphasis was really on story instead of big set pieces. We both really enjoyed it. I highly recommend that one too, especially if you like sci-fi.

Moon bored me to tears. Turned it off halfway through.

That's too bad. It struck me as an old fashioned sci-fi tale. Kinda Asimov-ish. I really don't want to say much more for fear of ruining it for others, but I found the story very enthralling. It hit all my buttons.

Man, I really want to say more.

I haven't heard of Moon.

I picked up Caprica (from the BSG-guys). maybe I'll watch it this weekend. I'm guessing the show has already started?

Is it time I started filing out the restraining order paperwork?
