I decided to crunch the number, and it might be possible for Sand watch those movies. If he was suspended from 1945 (according to wikipedia) to 1994 (the comic come out in 99 and he needed the five years to watch the movies so I'm working from that to guess the year) that's 54 years of movies to catch up on. If he watched the movies back to back, and the average time for the movies was 2 hours, subtracting 8 hours for sleep, he could watch roughly 14,616 movies in those 5 years. (I don't think there's that many noteworthy movies even now.)

365 days x 5 years = 1825 + 2 more days for the leap years x 16 hours a day = 29,232 hours /2 hours per movie = 14,616 movies.
