Let's get this ball rollin'!
Batman #690 - While I wasn't blown away by the Batman / Clayface fight, there were a few things in this issue that really intrigued me; The Penguin now working for Black Mask, and Two-Face breaking into the Batcave, defacing one side of the giant penny, and showing-off his new bitchin' threads. I think some people forget that in 52, Batman asked Harvey Dent to patrol and keep the streets of Gotham safe while he was gone. So Harvey has had the training to be his own twisted Two-Faced version of Batman.
Sweet Tooth #1 - Okay, so ever since Jeff Lemire's The Nobody came out, people have been acting like he's the second coming of Christ. After reading the first issue of this new series by him, I don't get what all the praise is about. Was is worth the $1 pricetag? Absolutely. Was it the best thing I've read in my entire lifetime? Hell no. The first issue, like many first issues, was all about the set-up, and we didn't get much from it. I'm sure it will pay-off in the future issues, but for now it's pretty 'meh'. I don't hate Lemire, I just don't get what all the hype is about.
Incognito #6 - Brilliant end to the first volume! We get the whole history behind the Overkill Brothers (all 26 of them), see Zach & Yuri fight to the death, and see Zach decide that maybe he's happier killing those who deserve it. Glad to hear there will be more stories in this new universe that both Brubaker & Philips have created, and so excited for the new volume of Criminal coming out soon!
Invincible Iron Man #17 - Why is it that when a new suit is confiscated by HAMMER, they don't check-out the insides first? This just reeks of a Trojan Horse. Interesting to see Tony having an extremely difficult time getting back home, but very eerie to see him slowly losing his ability to spell in emails.
Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #2 - Kind of a lame second issue of a relaunch in my opinion. I wanted to see more Mysterio up to no good, not a mother-daughter brawl with Spidey. It does feel weird to see the cops happy to see Spidey, rather than always trying to arrest him. How long do you suppose that's going to last?
Justice League: Cry For Justice #3 - 'Cry For Justice' sounds like a bondage movie put together for superheroes, by superheroes. All kidding aside, while I loathe the story, I have to admit that the art is pretty spectacular to look at.
Chew #4 - A lot of good, wacky fun in this issue. Everything from bored astronomers in Russia, to the killing of alpachas. Chew continues to be such an enjoyable read this week, that there's no excuse for you NOT to pick it up, what with another printing of the first issue coming out this week.
Irredeemable #6 - Mark Waid continues to hit it out of the park month after month with this title. The Plutonian continues to become creepier and creepier each issue, especially in this one when we discover years ago that he was the cause of a flesh-eating virus that was feeding off of children, making them walking skeletons. How fucked-up is that? This series is a MUST READ for those who enjoy their heroes with a hint of darkness.
Supergirl Annual #1 - I'm just not sure how I feel with Kryptonians like Kara and Kal-El just visiting Earth willy-nilly, when for a few months now it's been stressed that their kind isn't welcome. Hell, she doesn't even do all that much in the bank robbery, besides pissing-off another Kryptonian. And Superwoman is back, who didn't see that coming? As far as annuals go, this one was pretty poor.
Deadpool #15 - Wow, this is the first issue of Way's run that I wasn't a fan of. Everything seemed so depressing with Wade informing us how much it sucks to be immortal. Someone please snap him out of it and shoot him in the leg or something!
Immortal Weapons #2 - Very cool issue. I loved the Bride of Nine Spiders in the Immortal Iron Fist series, so it was very nice to see her again. Word of advice; don't summon her if she doesn't want to be summoned. She will fuck you up royally! Also beautiful David Aja cover as always.
Cable #18 - Okay, I gotta admit, I'm sort of getting tired of the same story of Cable and Hope on the run, Bishop about to end it all, then something else interferes and it all starts over again. Are they waiting for Hope to be the same age as all the other mutants before they decide to bring her back to the present? Let's get a move-on, people!
The Boys #34 - Hands-down my Pick of the Week. It's The Boys vs Stormfront, and I loved the WW2 comparisons of the Brits (Butcher) holding-out until the Yanks arrived (Mother's Milk), along with the French (The Frenchman), and finally the Russians (Love Sausage). They totally beat that Nazi Superman to a pulp, and totally scarred Hughie for life. Nice to see the Female wake from her coma the way she did, and I can't wait for the next awesome issue! Oh one more thing; AWESOME All-Star Superman #1 cover homage by Robertson.
Agents of Atlas #10 - Interesting to see the team okay after the cliffhanger of last issue. No real explanation of how they got back to HQ to recover, but it's all good I guess. Nice to see both sides prepare for battle, and nice to see M-11 get a much needed upgrade.
The Mighty #8 - Another week where both The Mighty and Irredeemable come out at the same time. I'm continuing to love both the art and the story, and am intrigued to see what sort of dirty laundry Alpha One is hiding in his hideout. Something tells me it isn't Christmas presents!
Ghost Riders: Heavens On Fire #2 - Nowadays I don't know who the Ghost Riders are working for. Is it Heaven or Hell? Selling of souls necessary? I dunno. All I know is I'm loving the art, and since it's Aaron writing, I know I'm in good hands and it'll all make sense in the end.
Final Crisis Aftermath: Run #5 - Oh good, it's almost over.
Witchfinder: In The Service of Angels #3 - While the story is sort of hard to follow at times, I'm just going ga-ga for the art and colors on this series. Ben Stenbeck's art with Dave Stewart's colors makes an awesome combination, and I could spent hours going back and looking at all the pages. Totally fits the Hellboy vibe, and is complete eye-candy.
Northlanders #20 - Nice little one-shot showing what Sven has been up to since the first arc of the series. Glad to know he's still terrifying with a sword, and is a force to be reckoned with dispite his age. Very enjoyable issue.
Solomon Grundy #7 - While I continued to love the art by Kolins, I wasn't a fan of the writing in this series. However, I don't know how I feel about Grundy getting a Black ring at the end of the series. Could be cool, could be horrible. Looks like we'll just have to wait and see.
Greek Street #3 - I still don't know what to think of this series. I'm leaning towards 'enjoy' more than 'drop', but it's still hard to follow at times. However I love Milligan, so I'll gladly continue to read it for now. The covers by Jock don't hurt either.
Savage Dragon #152 - Whaaaaat?!
Red Tornado #1 - Who the hell has been demanding a Red Tornado series?! I personally loathe the character, and think he's been one of the worst additions to the JLA in recent years. But apparently someone out there thinks it's a good idea. I won't be surprised when this series gets cancelled at issue 3.
Marvel Zombies Return: Spider-Man #1 - Ugh. This series isn't necessary.
Luke Cage: Noir #2 - I was enjoying the first issue more than this one. I'm not a fan of the villain Tombstone, and it didn't float my boat this time around.
Iron Man: Armor Wars #2 - Ummm...I like the Skottie Young cover, and that's it.
Black Panther 2 #8 - This series continues to be very enjoyable, and I'm glad it's been strong since the relaunch.
Doctor Who #3 - I'll be honest, no issue of this new ongoing has WOW'd me yet. Maybe things in prison will heat-up.
Great week for hardcovers, too. I saw a few that caught my eye that I must buy soon: Spider-Man: Sinister Six Premiere HC, Hulk: Grey Premiere HC, and Absolute V For Vendetta.
What did YOU like this week??
