Murd, I agree ... Quasar is one of the most balanced characters in the Marvel U. I don't want to say a everyman, but a person trying to do the right thing without being to over the top and never cried to much. I am talking about Wendell Vaughn, not all the other want to be's who were just borrowing the bands.

Laughed out loud at the "...and listeners like you!" Good show, sir.

really enjoyed the Supreme talk on this episode. If i am not mistaken 1 or 2 of those issues that were never published appeared in the Supreme: The Return TPB.

and after your Promethea discussion, I was curious if you have ever read Morrison's The Invisibles ?

Listen to the 'MATINEE IDLES' podcast

Comics were definitely happier, breezier and more confident in their own strengths before Hollywood and the Internet turned the business of writing superhero stories into the production of low budget storyboards or, worse, into conformist, fruitless attempts to impress or entertain a small group of people who appear to hate comics and their creators. - Grant Morrison

Yes, the Supreme talk was especially timely for me, as I just picked up the "Story of the Year" trade. The reprint quality is a little off, but that's a pretty minor gripe for an otherwise good book. I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen one of the issues a few days into my reading.

I think a Promethea BOTM would be a really interesting one. Not only is it a great book, but I can already hear some of the fights that might break out during the discussion wink.gif The best episodes are the fighty episodes!

Great episode, Murd. It seemed as though you were able to get through more comics in less time this episode; whether that was due to your show notes or not, I'm not sure. But I did want to say THANK-YOU for going over one of my favourite issues from one of my favourite series: Martian Manhunter #24. That is just a great comic, and I was overjoyed to hear you mention it on the show.

Keep up the good work!

Great episode Adam! It's an honor to sponsor this episode. Keep up your great work. I hope every listener will send the $$ for more Murd episodes.

I agree with your Brainiac comments. I have that issue where they updated him myself. Actually, I would suggest you look at the recent Geoff Johns arc. He does a nice job with the villain and even brings back the idea of the bottle cities.

FYI: Neil Gaiman is coming to give a free talk at the Cleveland Public Library in early October!

Another great show Murd! I love the tangents you go on. I always learn so much about comics when listening to you.

Great show Murd! I really look forward to these as they brings me up to speed on periods I missed. I only wished I heard this before Fan Expo so I could have had some more ideas for finding gems while digging through the cheap bins.

I've read very little of Hourman, but the few issues I have are quite good (the one where he brings back Tomorrow Woman with his Hour of Power is quite touching). I really need to make an effort to track these down one of these days, especially since the book takes place right here in Rhode Island (Happy Harbor being a fictitious stand-in for Middletown or Bristol, I figure).

And glad to hear the kudoes for Elliott S! Maggin, too, one of my very favorite Superman writers (certainly my Bronze Age favorite), and definitely the guy who best defined Lex Luthor. Maggin's Luthor had a genuine sense of purpose, the drive to be the equal and opposite reaction to Superman's every action. I dig that. If you really want to see Maggin get inside Lex's shiny head, track down the first of his two Superman prose novels, The Last Son of Krypton. There are some great Lex-centric passages in that.

Good episode Murd!

I was happy to hear you liked DBZ, I am a big fan from fansubs before
it came over to the USA, so many people seem to dislike it, glad to
heat you appreciate it.

I think the episode was very smooth compared to other time capsule
episode's. Not that there was anything wrong with them. So maybe the
show notes/and experience of the other episodes lead to a more
relaxed flow. Either way keep up the good work.

These where some fun issues to hear about, some more obscure than others
was fun to hear about gorilla as I was out of collecting
at that time.

I would also recomend checking out the recent Johns/Frank depiction
of Braniac it was pretty cool.

Not regarding the charactization but the Robot braniac was always
such a cool visual design, never knew who created it.

Yah, very cool to hear some Supreme jabber. Such a very good run that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Why DC keeps dicking Moore over when they could have him do that sort of work on a monthly Superman book is mind-bogglingly stupid. As much as I absolutely detest the camp idiocy of the DC Silver Age, it's a mighty work indeed that can take that sort of conceptology and make me embrace it.

Definately track down Hourman. I loved that series and was sad to see it go

The Hourman series y'all bespeak of is that android one from DC 1Million, right? I thought that whole event and all them 1Million versions were kinda piss-weak. What makes the Hourman comic so great?

Really? Everything I've ever seen of it made it look like it was destined for cancellation from page 1, panel 1. I'll have to dig some up and prove myself wrong.

Hourman is a badass book. One of the few titles I was reading around that time, since I was in the thick of college as well. I've never read Empire, but the concept has always really intrigued me. I've got some birthday cash lying around, perhaps an Amazon.com order is in line soon...
