Blackest Night #1 - The major event in the DCU is finally here, and let the Green Lantern fans rejoice! This (obviously) was hands-down my pick of the week! So many great moments in this first issue, and it's only a set-up issue for crying out loud! You get the return of every single member of the Green Lantern Corps (or in this case, the Green Lantern Corpse) who has been slain in battle since Rebirth, you have the return of the Martian Manhunter, and the most creepy return of them all, Ralph & Sue Dibny. I think the thing that creeped me out the most about their brutal return was that I cared so much about the characters in JLI, Identity Crisis, and 52, so to see them as evil superpowered zombies all of a sudden was very unsettling. Awesome first issue, and I can't wait to read the next issue / crossovers!
Blackest Night: Tales Of The Corps #1 - Two awesome Blackest Night titles in one week? Hot damn! A guy could get used to this sort of treatment. Within this issue we get mini stories about Saint Walker and how he had to sacrifice everything for hope, Mongul's early childhood, and interesting clues on what the Indigo Lanterns powers are. Very nice companion to the Blackest Night, and we'll get two more killer issues in the months ahead.
Captain America #601 - I was really surprised I enjoyed this issue so much. I was still feeling burned from issue 600, that after reading 601, I was warm with happiness on the inside. Comics Legend Gene Colan does the art on this issue, and it's just so wonderful. We follow Bucky back in WW2 hunting vampires with Steve, and the art compliments the story so nicely. Don't waste your time with the previous issue, this issue makes-up for it in spades.
Dark Avengers #7 - I'm liking the team that Emma is leading, but the conflict between the Dark X-Men and Dark Avengers is what's really keeping me hooked. Deodato's art certainly helps, because when I usually think "Uncanny X-Men", I think "Greg Land", and that's unfortunate. So bravo to Fraction and Deodato for a very enjoyable issue, can't wait to see what happens next.
Amazing Spider-Man #599 - What a conclusion to the American Son arc, one that I never saw coming! Father versus son, mistress versus Spider-man, and future goblin babies taking over Osborn's goblin empire! Very comforting to see Harry finally become his own man, no longer living in his father's shadow. Joe Kelly is a fantastic writer, and I cannot wait for his upcoming Spider-man / Deadpool stuff. ALSO, I'm simply stoaked for issue 600! Doc Ock is back, baby!
Batman: Streets Of Gotham #2 - Big improvement from the first issue, in my opinion. We have Hush on the loose again after tricking Alfred, and an awesome fight between Firefly, Black Mask, Batman, Robin, and Mr. Zsaz. Nguyen's art fits Dini's tone perfectly, making this Batman title a must-read for me from now on.
Incognito #5 - Zack Overkill & Ava Destruction on the run, and finally get a little intimate with each other. Which is kind of weird because A) Ava was Xander's girl, and B) she's stuck in a 16-year old's body forever. So I guess if you like sex with minors and supervillain noir, this book is for you. I kid! Phillips and Brubaker continue to bring it with this issue, making Incognito my favorite Crime book of the summer!
Action Comics #879 - So what takes Nightwing and Flamebird the last couple of issues to do, this new tattoo'd girl does in a blink of an eye? If she's that good at capturing Kryptonians, why aren't the two stars of this title captured yet? Another unimpressive issue to me.
The Walking Dead #63 - Robert Kirkman is a sick fuck. Sure it's been known for awhile now, but every time I read this title, I keep forgetting that he's fully capable of upping the ante to the next level. Just when you think you've seen it all in this book (or Invincible), he throws a curveball right at your head taking you completely by surprise. What's worse than the living dead trying to eat you? How about just the living, and you're still alive as they amputate and devour your limbs after cooking them over an open fire? If this series ever gets adapted for the silver screen or television, remind me to keep my puke-bucket at the ready. Well played, Kirkman, but damn you for being so unpredictable! Plus as an added bonus, you get the entire first issue of CHEW in the back, all for the same $3 price-tag. Image is just kicking all sorts of ass!
Deadpool #12 - Alas, all things fun must eventually come to an end...for this arc, at least. The very amusing battles between Hawkeye and Deadpool have tickled my fancy for the past few issues, and I was happy to see it come to a close in a very interesting twist at the end. If these two were to have a Green Arrow / Green Lantern type adventure across America, I'd buy every issue. The chemistry between these two frenemies is great, and I continue to enjoy Way's run on the series.
Mighty Avengers #27 - It was interesting to see a young Inhumans team, but that was the only redeeming factor to this issue. I don't care about this team, I don't care about their mission, and I'm not fond of title still existing. Some might disagree, but I'm sure that's because they're die-hard fans of Slott. Then again, for all I know they could just be having fun with ther series, and I'm talking out of my ass as usual.
Punisher #7 - If you were brought back from the dead with the chance to remain alive after completing a single task, would you not take advantage of the situation and get right to the killing?! Some of these baddies might as well stay dead with the amount of effort they're putting forth, let alone willing to cooperate as a team to take down Frank Castle. Remender continues to blow me away with his run, and doesn't show any signs of stopping soon.
Scalped #30 - A close contender for Pick of the Week, that's for damn sure! Agent Nitz is having a field-day with spreading a rumor that there's a rat on the Rez, and that same rat is suppose to plug the leak. Red Crow puts Badhorse on the case, and Badhorse starts loosing his shit. Meanwhile, Mr. Brass bites the dust, and it's going to be a full-on war between Red Crow and the Hmong. Awesome start to an epic arc!
Fables #86 - We finally get the origin story of of Mister Dark, and how he came to be captured. And while he appears only in the final pages being captured, following the talented young wizard throughout the beginning who does eventually capture him is entertaining enough. Fables is still going strong after the great crossover, and that's the way I like it!
JSA Vs Kobra #2 - I know Trautman was co-writer on Checkmate (one of my favorite series) , but these Checkmate type spin-offs aren't really doing it for me. Kobra is reminding me too much of Hydra over in the Marvel universe, and to be honest I'm enjoying Hydra more nowadays.
Lockjaw & The Pet Avengers #3 - Alas, the Bobama cameo! I've been having fun with this series (total guilty pleasure), but it was really strange to see a non-pet villain at the end such as Thanos up against the super pets. He didn't have enough time to take on the A-listers? Is the Infinity Gauntlet business slow nowadays? Still a very fun series nonetheless.
Agents Of Atlas #8 - I gotta hand it to Jeff Parker, I've been having such a great time whenever I read this series. It's evolved so much from the Dark Reign storyline, and I feel like the series has really become its own beast. The characters are fantastic, and this story in particular was creepy with all the different science experiments roaming around, and the tolerable Hulk cameo (tolerable as in they didn't make him look like a big angry doofus). I'll gladly keep reading this series if Marvel doesn't decide to cancel it.
Titans #15 - If you're familiar with my previous reviews on Titans, you'll know that I'm not a fan in the slightest. However, this issue alone might be my favorite from the entire run so far. We have Tempest (Aqualad) returning to Atlantis, and struggling with the decision whether to rule in Arthur's place or not. It was very fitting of him to visit Dick as Batman, for Dick knows a thing or two about filling your mentor's boots. It seems the Blackest Night will touch upon the Teen Titans, and that too is fitting seeing how the Titans have a long history with funerals.
RASL #5 - I can't for the life of me remember what happened in issue four, let alone the first issue, so the best thing for me to do is simply wait for the trade.
Superman / Batman #62 - Flashback issue of the first Robin / Supergirl team-up, but it just felt really forced and out of place. Wasn't a fan this time.
Sherlock Holmes #3 - The mystery continues, and becomes curiouser and curiouser. Glad to see how resourceful Holmes can be, but for the love of god man, let Dr. Watson know before he gives himself a heart-attack from all the worrying he's doing!
Dark Reign: Mister Negative #2 - I'll admit I enjoyed this issue more that the first. I think what really catches my eye is the cool looking negative colored Spider-Man suit.
Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #2 - Bill is one crazy sonuvabitch! It's bad enough he's battling the Heralds, but keeping Galactus from eating by destroying all the planets he plans on feeding on? That's a dick move. Not as big of a dick move as blackmailing a planet to evacuate, but he got karma on that one; no longer is he worthy enough to lift his own hammer. At least he still has his looks going for him, right?
DMZ #43 - The character in this issue really reminded me of Frank Castle; loses his family and avenges their deaths by killing the ones responsible. Not only the guy responsible, but his family as well. Talked about fucked-up! Wood & Kelly continue to tell a great story from another point of view in the DMZ.
Buck Rogers #2 - Hmmm, I'm mixed about this issue, let alone this series so far. It could be because I didn't grow up being a fan of Buck Rogers (because I never saw the movies or read the comics), or it could be from the confusing story I'm having a hard time following. Either way, I'm on the fence.
Final Crisis: Aftermath #3 - See my review on JSA Vs Kobra for my feelings on Checkmate-like spin-offs.
Creepy Comics #1 - I got this on a whim because I like a majority of the stuff Dark Horse puts out, and it has an Eric Powell cover. However, this book wasn't what I was expecting, and to be honest, not really worth the $5 price tag. Sure the paper is glossy and gorgeous, but the black & white stories weren't really floating my boat. Luckily, it comes out quarterly (I think that's what I heard), so I have some time to re-read it and decide whether or not I want to continue picking it up.
Air #11 - Very enjoyable start to the new arc, as we follow Blythe trying to adjust to this new life of hers. Romance, concentration while flying, and one-night stands continue to make this series enjoyable and by far my favorite thing to come from Vertigo since Northlanders.
Doctor Who Ongoing #1 - The Doctor and Charlie Chaplin? Not a bad way to start-off the new ongoing series from IDW. The different actor names he was telling people had me in stitches, mainly because I'm hearing David Tennant in my head while reading it. Things are looking good so far, and I plan to keep picking it up.
Robot 13: Colossus! #1 - The cover looked very Mike Mignola-esque, so I had to check it out. Interior art is the same as the cover, and even the story is Mignola-esque. I really enjoyed this first issue, and consider it my hidden gem of the week, and maybe even month! I'll definitely be keeping an eye-out for the next issue.
What did YOU get / read / enjoy / hate??
