Well, we are half way through the new year and perhaps it is time to start thinking about Peter and the crew's Best of 2009 poll at the end of the year. Six months in, what are your contenders?

BEST WRITER
Blackest Night is just starting so we'll see how the Johns vote goes but I'm still digging what Abnett and Lanning are doing. Nova, Guardians, and now War of the Kings to the list.

BREAKOUT TALENT OF 2009
It's finally here! Cursed Pirate Girl! Jeremy Bastian delivers some incredible work.

BEST PUBLICATION ABOUT COMICS (print only)
Comics Now and Rough Stuff have folded. The Modern Masters series is excellent but Back Issue might steal this one away.

BEST EDITOR
Still early but Mark Chiarello has put together a stellar line up with Wednesday Comics.

BEST NEW COMIC

X-Men Forever!

BEST LIMITED SERIES (At least half of the series must be in 2008)

Seaguy: The Slaves of Mickey Eye. Bring on the finale!

BEST SINGLE ISSUE OR ONESHOT

It's hard to remember everything I've read, to be honest. I might have to go with Seaguy #3. Or maybe an issue of X-Men: Legacy, which I've really enjoyed.

BEST CLIFFHANGER OR MOMENT

The one that immediately springs to mind is SPOILER: when Xavier finally cure Rogue in Legacy #224.

BEST STORYLINE WITHIN A SERIES OR MULTIPLE SERIES

I'll go with Seaguy, since it's the middle chapter of a three part series of minis.

BEST SLEEPER HIT/SURPRISE (in comics)

G.I. Joe: Cobra. I was almost going to pass on this one, but I'm glad I didn't. It's totally awesome.

BEST ONGOING COMIC (doesn't have to start in 2008)

X-Men: Legacy.

BEST REPRINT COLLECTION (trade, hardcover, Absolute, Omnibus, Essential, Showcase, etc.)

I'm going with Marvel putting out their Masterworks in paperback. If only DC would follow suit with the Archives. Of those, I'll go with Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1.

BEST WRITERs

Mike Carey - the one guy doing universally great work on the X-franchise at the moment.

BEST ARTIST

Cameron Stewart. Gorgeous stuff.

BEST COVER ARTIST

Whoever did those awesome variant covers on Transformers: All Hail Megatron. Really striking stuff.

BREAKOUT TALENT OF 2009

Probably Matt Fraction.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF 2009

The core G.I. Joe book. So Chuck Dixony...

Oh! Or Warren Ellis on Astonishing X-Men. Such an awesome writer, but that book is dreadful.

BEST COMIC PROJECT IN ANOTHER MEDIUM (movie, TV, toys, novels, etc.)

For want of a better candidate, the Watchmen movie.

MOST ANTICIPATED FOR 2009

X-Men Forever. A decade of me asking for it, and it's finally here.

Just a reminder: don't forget X-Factor #39. So far that's got my vote for best moment and best single issue (though I did like Wolverine 70 quite a bit too).

I think I've missed every one of these (usually as I can't find time to work out what trades were published when) but I'm determined to give it the full beans this time around.

It's always fun to re-read what I said at the halfway point and see how it measures up to the end of the year. Some have stayed the same, but there are some definite changes that will be made!

Hard to believe that we are already at the end of another decade. Perhaps a couple months in, we can do the same for a BEST OF THE DECADE?

Agents of Atlas #1 was cover dated for April. Can Anyone confirm that it came out in January or later for me?

Also, I'm looking for suggestions for...
BEST NEW HERO OR TEAM
BEST ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL (I haven't read too many here so I might have to give this a pass)
BEST COLORIST
BEST LETTERER

Also for your CGS consideration....
BEST WRITERS.....

Abnett and Lanning!!

Sure, many of you probably had Geoff Johns penciled in six months before BLACKEST NIGHT even came out but these guys have been knocking it out of the park with NOVA, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and WAR OF THE KINGS. They've captured the Marvel Cosmic Corner and made it fun again and you never know what is around the corner. They wrote the more fun Marvel event book of 2009 and made two previously cancelled books in Nova and Guardians a joy to read each month.

By the way - since I've been asked a few times - for Best Writer it is totally cool to include a team such as Abnett and Lanning or Pamiotti and Gray, etc.
