So I've come to a realizatin, Exploring Bede is kind of like a fine wine. You can only get to taste it every once in a while, but when you do, DAMN IS IT GOOD! Seriously, though, maybe its time we expose Bryan to some gamma-rays and trigger a mutation so he can become multi-man...that way he'd have more time to do these shows. This interview with Erica Jeffrey is excellent, and really gives us readers (and creators) more insight into the process of taking a book written in a foreign language and bringing it to the US market. I've had similar talks with some of the translators I know at Tokyo Pop, but never this indepth.

As for Erica's comment about feeling bad about sometimes altering a word choice due to making a sentence fit into a word balloon. As a creator I can actually speak to this. DON'T STRESS IT. Truth is, while word choice is everything in prose, this isn't the case in sequential story telling. Sequential art tells its stories by text, visuals, and how these text & visuals flow from panel to panel. Changing text so the the word-ballons don't derail this flow itsVITAL. I do this all the time in my own scripts, because at the end of the day, the words are not the end-all be-all of the story. It is the complete package. So again, if Erica needs to change word choices to preserve the over-all presentation, she shouldn't sweat it.

a very nice episode, really interesting on how cinebook works.
"le complexe du chimpanzé" is a 3 volume serie (the last one was out in november 2008).
some previews are available ... tome 1 ... tome 2 ... tome 3 ... a trailer is also available ...
for the second serie i would go for a classic dargaud one. perhaps one that had already been published in english long times ago.
how about Blueberry, XIII, La quête de l'oiseau du temps or blacksad ??
bryan, i'm glad that my translation helped you a little, and please rework and rewrite it ...

"la graine de folie", there are 5 books available, 4 for the story itself, the 5th one is an artwork/making of one ...
it has been reprint 2 times in "intégrales" (the 4 books joined in one)

I think it was funny how Erica kept saying "that's a really great question", but they honestly all were really great questions.

Also, it was really amazing to see her be so accepting of fansubs/scanslations. FYI fansubs are technically illegal. It's just that the anime industry has traditionally turned a blind eye to those who do it ethically. Of course, they also gave Crunchy Roll a pile of money for doing it blatantly unethically.

I appreciate all the feedback on the interview! I'd like to clarify one point, a good one that Apreche brought up about fansubs/scanslations: Cinebook doesn’t endorse any kind of copyright infringement of their books or anyone else's. My sort of blithe answer to the question was from me as an individual writer and reader myself. Obviously the practice exists, as do other forms of copyright infringement, and no amount of saying "Stop doing that" will put a stop to it entirely. But the law is there to protect people’s artistic creations. I don’t want to give the impression that Cinebook or any publisher or artist would turn a blind eye to a copyright infringement. Cinebook has the interests of the authors/artists and original publishers at heart as well as its own.

I hadn't realized Cinebook existed, but after hearing this, I was excited to head over to the website and peruse things. So my question is, have you ever thought of providing a one or two page sample of the contents of each book? The few I clicked on so far [including Largo Winch which was discussed quite a bit on this episode], simply have a one or two sentence text description and nothing else to judge the book on.

Oh! If you click on the 2 sample-page images below each title on www.cinebook.com (after clicking on a title's cover), they'll enlarge. You can see the art quite well, but I find the text a leeeetle small in those sample pages myself.

I just want to put my .02 in on the Scanlation issue. I am sure most of you who are my age are aware that back in the day before internet collage clubs would by subtitle machines and "fansub" anime. Not only that but people would also type out translations of Manga so you could by the original Japanese book and read it like a script. Now days we have torrents and digital scans of manga available online for free. You don’t even have to trade a tape for them unless you consider torenting a method of sharing your titles. The age old argument from even the early days is that if everyone has these fan made copies why would anyone by the official licensed product put out by companies like Viz and Animeigo. Some say that they don't give a shit about having the nice packaging of the retail product and others are pissed when there is no chance of a company taking a chance on a product that is already in the fans possesion. There is also been kind of an honor code by the fansub groups of immediately discontinuing a series once it has been licensed by an American company. They will usually take away the torrent links from the fan sites although once the files are out there you can usually still find them in torrent. I would say if care about the original making money from they product you should use the old method of typing up a separate script for and then fans can by the original book from International sites. The only problem with this is companies like Cinebook might be reluctant to put out a certain title if they feel most of the audience already has a copy they are satisfied with.

Fan Translations are a complicated issue and I am sorry if I bored you with a lot of information you are already well familiar with.
