It has been pointed out to me recently that being the editor on a comic book anthology wi8th 30+ writers and artists is a lot like wrangling a herd of cats. You know...it actually does feel a lot like that. smile.gif When I first started with the project I thought I'd be lucky to get a couple pages from myself and maybe a page or two from a couple of buddies. All these months later we have over 60 pages of original art!! That's amazing!!! But that also means that to put that all in one big book it would have to be so expensive that no one would buy it. So after a lot of thought and deliberation we've decided to now have TWO issues of CGS3! What's that mean for you (besides the fact that you now have to buy two issues of CGS3 instead of one). Well that means that, thanks to our friends at CGS and HueDoo...we're holding another coloring challenge for the cover!!

Simply click on the above picture to download the file

I asked my friend Jun Bob Kim if he was available for the cover and not only did he agree...but he drew an amazing interpretation of The Visionary's sidekick Kid Midas. And, by the way, he got the art back to me in record time!!! (seriously...it was like...literally a couple hours. Wow!) If you don't know who Jun bob Kim is, shame on you. Go check out his website today at www.junbobkim.com. His commission work is unbelievable. He's also the artist on Ursula Wilde which I encourage you to check out at http://ursulawilde.blogspot.com.

So, who is this Kid Midas you ask?? Well let me fill you in! A kid robot, built by a Visionary of an alternate universe and crossed over to this universe, he now hangs out with this Visionary and enjoys being the sidekick to the greatest hero on the planet. Midas is a golden robot, built by the techno-god of the other universe. He uses a metal slingshot and is an expert shot, sending little balls of golden fire at his enemies. He is extremely agile and loves to take chances, much to Visionary’s dismay. He is built of super high, futuristic technology, but he appears to function thanks to lots of steam vents and exposed gears and circuitry.

Now it's up to you to show us what you've got!! Download the art, color it to the best of your ability and post it back here in this thread. After that we'll judge all the entries and announce the winner the first week of June. The winning entry winner will have their art printed as the cover of CGS3 Issue #2. Unlike a regular coloring challenge...this one DOES have a time limit. All complete files need to be posted here to this thread no later than Friday, May 29, 2009 at 11:59 pm CST. The thread will stay open after that time, but all submissions after that time will not be eligible for the CGS3 Issue 2 Challenge. If for any reason the link to the artwork does not work, PM me and I'll help you out.

Oh, and for the record...Issue #1's coloring challenge winner was colored by Ryan Lord.

We've had some set backs waiting for all the pieces of the book to come together (herding cats) but we're hoping to get Issue 1 available for preorder that same time that the cover for issue #2's cover art comes in.

Thanks for the chance to do the cover. It was good variation from the current project I am working on; and I needed that spice of life. I am also really excited to see what everyone's take will be on this.

I left the art relatively open for interpretation on lighting and shadows so everyone can add his/her personal take on the mood.

Nope. Its a new character for a new story that's in CGS3. There is some direction in the character description...but we're leaving it up to the colorists to come up with something great!

Hello, Tribespeople! My PC's graphics card pooped out on me and I was computerless for a week, but I've wanted to accept this challenge, so here's my version of Jun Bob Kim's Kid Midas. My demo of CS2 ran out, so this was done without scripts or actions on Photoshop 7.0, as Harlan Ellison once wrote, "...stone knives and bearskins...". I cant wait for Hi-Fi Color for Comics II and the promised metallic finish techniques, an admitted weakness.

Looking good! The new book features not one but two different "Focus on Detail" sections dedicated to gold and chrome as well as a short video demonstrating how to render metal.

Brian, when you normally do the challenge, do you ever give comments on the pieces that people post or keep the crits and comments on the other forums only?

Nice work Kevin!! My only crit would be to maybe take the shadows a little deeper on the figure and give the background some interest. Maybe some extra shadows...or a little more texture?

But nice job!! Looks great!

One thing I don't think my drawing made clear was that the bar that extends the length KMidas' left forearm (and the attached butted cup) is actually part of the slignshot, that serves as a stabilizer.
