I've only read these books once when they were hitting the newsstand. When I did read them I don't think I gave them the attention they deserved (I kinda half assed it). this episode may make me crawl into the caverns below the Tiki Hut and dig these out for another go 'round. smile.gif

A moment of silence for the departed Byrne/Jurgens era.

Thrown out the door like so much dirty bath water. Welcome the creepy Christopher Reeve Silver Age retread era. Sigh.

I'm just curious, I was listening on my way into work this morning and it abruptly cut out around the one hour twenty minute mark. Anyone else have this experience, or is iTunes being buggy on me again?

Just claim the gaps in this episode as side effects from Zero Hour. The DC event that never should had happened in my opinon.  John Bryne is the best Superman writer & artist (for the 80s) until Geoff Johns as writer came on the scene w/ various writers & artists in the meantime of Superman's history.  I scaled back on DC books following Death of Superman.  The Jurgen years was good just not great in my opinon in comparison. I also enjoyed the World of Krypton, Smallville, & Metropolis minis (that had the introduction to Jimmy & Lois at the daily planet also). In closing, I HATE Superman Birthright maxiseries just sticking to Bryne MOS miniseries as the best Superman origin story. Mark Waid should never tug on Superman's cape as a Superman writer (He can do anything else DC just not Superman as far as I am concerned). There are 6 trades (vol. 1 is the 6 part mini that started it all off & 5 trades of the various Superman titles post COIE) of Man of Steel Superman era available.

Man, I love these Spotlight episodes -- sorry to hear there will only be one more. (But then Batman's 70th... right, gang? questionmark.gif ) You have made me want to go out and read all of Byrne's stuff -- I had been avoiding it, but not sure why. I had some vague idea it was bad, but everyone's enthusiasm for it makes me think I should really give it a try.

LOL moment: Jamie's description of the store's wedding festivities for Superman. Great stuff!

By the time Superman issue 1 hit, Superman had been around for 10 years in the DC Universe. In Man of Steel, we get the sense of the passage of time, but it wasn't until a few years later that I realized how long they intended that to be.

Jurgens was the artist on Adventures for a time, and then was the writer artist on that book, while Ordway was over in Superman proper. His stuff with Art Thibert inking was some of my favourite Superman art. Brett Breeding made his art look a lot more boxy. Thibert's ink made it look a lot more expressive.

The three "World of" miniseries all fleshed out a lot of details, and sowed seeds for storylines that played out in the main books for several years. As Peter said, it also put a lot of character motivations into motion. It was all about building the world!

Just listened to the rest of the episode through the homepage. Out of all of the Superman spotlights, I think I enjoyed this one the most.

Dang, turns out when I downloaded the ep via iTunes this morning it did cut the episode short for some reason. I'll have to try again later, I suppose.

Sigh! Will we ever know how shallow Peter was going to get in talking about Cat Grant?!? My iPod freezes up at that point, and listening on the homepage made Safari shut down, so you know it had to be good!

Everything seems to be fine on my end - both on my iTunes and the front page.

I have not yet heard this episode yet but I think the most interesting thing about this era is how much of what was left out of continuity has been returned. I think it was a mistake in the long run to push aside Zod, Phantom Zone, Kandor, Kara, Krypto, etc. I think the franchise did need to be retooled back then and I am happy that much of the mythos has been restored.

PS: CGS guys, send an email to www.supermanhomepage.com & they will highlight your episode to its many readers.

As I was listening it started looping the same three seconds for about an hour of it.

I think Bryan was probably being a little hard on Giordano inks and maybe giving Byrne too much credit. Byrne's pencils in this era (when he was doing so many books a month) were notorious loose, almost more layouts. I've read somewhere Austin commenting how people expected him to produce highly detailed stuff reminiscent of their X-men days but without Byrne's tight pencils. He ended up really souring on working with John.

Byrne probably spent a lot more time on concept and writing than drawing that first mini. I think once it was greenlit, they rushed to get it out. Least that's the feeling I got reading the Byrne Modern Masters.

Dean - thanks for that information. Certainly helps to put that first mini in context.

In terms of character revamp trends in DC, surely "The Anatomy Lesson" is the important watermark. A year before Crisis and two years before Man of Steel, I think it set numerous trends, one of which was how a complete revamp of a character could boost interest and be both a commercial & creative success. (And like a lot of key Alan Moore works, I'm not sure the lessons it contained were totally understood)

Murd--I am absolutely with you on the "realism is overrated" thing. The trend towards realism in the popular culture has yielded some pretty impressive stuff (Children of Men, BSG) but it already feels stagnant to me, supported by executives who see a market cycle rather than genuine creativity. I expect DC to lag behind Marvel in audience share--especially in cinemas, where only Bats can really be "realistic"--until they decide to set the pop trends rather than follow them. I enjoy the Byrne era well enough, but it feels like a similar moment, trying to capture Marvel's tone rather than find a way to sell readers on the joyous, imaginative excesses of DC.
