Collected Comics Library Podcast #178

34,560Kb; 36m 25s

http://www.collectedcomicslibrary.com/

Sometimes a comic book comes along and makes you think. It makes you think about the world you live in; makes you think about your own life and makes you think about comic books in general and how they definitely are not just for kids. Writer Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man) and artist Tony Harris (Starman) do exactly that in Ex Machina and that is the reason we feature it on the CCL Podcast today. Yes, all of it is excellent story wise and artistically, but it’s with the incoherent editing of this Deluxe Hardcover from DC Comics/Windstorm, that I have a problem with.

Also on the show, as promised I tell you about my conspiracy theory with the upcoming X:Men: Longshot Premiere Classic Hardcover and its’ subsequent and timely Press Release from over the past weekend. And I read off a few e-mails regarding the Marvel Illustrated books and who they really meant for – and yes I have an issue with that, too.

So basically the show today is a very cynical view of things. All this and The New Releases of the Week.

Conceptually Ex Machina is great, but the execution has yet to win me over. Katirna buys them in trade so I read up to vol 5, but I've given up. Also is #11 a one shot or the actual start of a new arc? It's been a while since I read the story, but I could've sworn #12 is the start of a new story where #11 is a transition issue. I'm thinking about buying this for a friend, but I don't know about it if it ends with the beginning of a new story.

Thanks for a great episode as always Chris!

Regarding the Marvel Illustrated titles, I'm guessing that even with modest sales, Marvel is planning on recovering their production costs on the single issues, and making the bulk of their profits from libraries.

The phrase about "the best laid plans..." comes to mind as I look at how many libraries are stocking these books, via WorldCat.org.

For example...

WorldCat lists

30 libraries carrying MI: Treasure Island

43 libraries carrying MI: The Man in the Iron Mask

50 libraries carrying MI: The Last of the Mohicans

and

1 library (in the U.K.) carrying MI: Moby Dick ( WorldCat indexes Libraries outside of the U.S. too)

In comparison, WorldCat lists Watchmen in 1263 libraries, and Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code in 4235 libraries.

My local library has a ton of comic books, but they're all trade paperbacks. I don't think they have a single hardcover. I don't know why Marvel is releasing the Marvel Illustratedd in high-end hardcovers, when I'm guessing most libraries just want trades.

I'll probably be selling my first two Ex Machina trades and buy this instead. I'm a sucker for DVD extras.
