Collected Comics Library Podcast #176

42,690Kb; 36m 12s

http://www.collectedcomicslibrary.com/

This week on the show I give a full rundown of the DC Comics January/1Q 2009 Collected Editions. I blogged about this a few days ago and I have yet to come up with a source for the list so take it with a grain (or chunk) of salt.

Also on the show I do a little eBay Sold Searching and you won’t believe just what are hot commodities and the final sold prices for the books.

Have an email question regarding what to do with damaged books that are bought at conventions; news on a brand new cool Prince Valiant retrospective; and is anyone buying the Marvel Illustrated books?

All this including the New Releases of the Week, what’s coming up on the next TwoMorrows Tune-In Podcast and a Kick-Ass (#1-2) giveaway - find out how to enter on the show.

Please visit my site sponsors: In-Stock Trades, Forbidden Planet International (UK), and Library Binding Company.

Chris

Absolute Superman For Tomorrow; $99.99

Only if there is a 50% discount. I'd buy this for art, not the story. I love Lee's art, so the largest format possible might be my choice.

Saga of Swamp Thing Book One Deluxe HC; $24.99
The Complete Death Deluxe HC; $34.99
Starman Omnibus Volume 2
Superman Brainiac HC

My DC trade list is always small because I buy so much monthly, but I hope we're going to receive more absolute news soon.

The HC of teh swamp thing issues does appeal to me I must say.. trades might just to doit.. if it was uber HC with merely an upgrade of a single trade...

Vertigo should put out showcase of their old series rather and keep on cashing on moore's swamp thing... for I'm not sure IT will make such a cash nowadays...

and transmet should be deluxe HC too not trades.(new one out in january)

If transmet collects 2 trades into 1 softcover, I'll still take it. A HC would be nice, but I just want to maximize my issue per collection ratio.

Actually they seems to be doing what they talked about a few month earlier... get old tp1 and 2 into a single one.. and then TP0 and last one also into one volume... with new trade dress.

It's a shame DC couldn't get the Tiny Titans TPB out on shelves before Christmas; I know a dozen kids who I could have hooked this holiday season!

Just listen to this on my way home from work - glad to hear about so many great collections.

I highly recommend Vigilante: Big City Lights, Prairie Justice for those who haven't read it.

Full disclosure: I'm a big Vig fan but I think anyone would like it.

James Robinson tells a great story and takes a bit of a Sandman Mystery Theatre 'pulpy' vibe out West.

It's a great little tale that's flown under the radar for too long.

I've actually been picking up Marvel Illustrated: The Iliad. It's pretty much a direct adaptation of the epic poem, though they of course have to omit some of the more tedious bits. The artwork is solid (good, not great). Roy Thomas does a decent job of adapting the language of the text. He doesn't try to update the language the way Brian Wood does in Northlanders. I don't know how much enjoyment the average comic reader will get from the series if they didn't already know the source material.

After Iliad ends Marvel will pick up with the Odyssey, which I'll wait for the trade on. That may be the best way to read these Marvel Illustrated books.

I forgot....

I am totally stoked about the Losers book. I have been pulling my hair out tracking down back issues. So much Kirby goodness - wonderful stuff.

I was about 5 seconds away from post a 'Reprint This' feature on the Losers when I heard about the reprint.

I'm glad to see DC will keep putting out the JLI hardcovers. I love those. I wish they were collected in an Omnibus edition instead, like the Forth World and Starman books. If they plan to collect the entire JLI run, hardcovers with 8 issues at a time are too small.

The only Marvel Illustrated books I've picked up are the six issues of "The Picture of Dorian Gray," because it's one of my favorite novels. I thought the art was excellent, but overall, the series lacked the wit of Oscar Wilde's fantastic prose. I'd be curious to know how many hundreds of copies that thing sold.
