Larry Marder? Oh, hell yeah! Tales from the Beanworld is one my most favorite comics ever, and I'm glad that not only is there going to be new material, but that the existing stuff is supposed to come back in print (especially since that first run of trades never finished the series). Downloading now. thumbsup_anim.gif

We both found this to be an intensely interesting episode. Listening to Larry talk about the early days of Image (which was a huge thing for us back in our pre and early teen years) was very cool. We can image how trying to corral all those huge names must have been quite the task. And to have worked for McFarlane Toys is so cool - and just him talking about the mechanics of transferring a drawing, or the puppets into physical toys was a neat insight.

On floppy vs. trade our thoughts tend to be this; a floppy should be more like a TV show and trade (if made specifically for that format) should be structured more like a movie. Not that you can't put either one into the over format if need be - but they seem to work best of thought of in those separate genera's. Kinda like The Goon: Chinatown was like a movie - and about anything Mark Waid does is like a good, concise TV show.

Now, lastly, all the talk about bean world made us want to pick up a copy right away while it's fresh in our heads. Is there any timeline on when the book will be coming out?

I was very happy to hear the adjective Larry used to describe the Beanworld collections - affordable. When I first heard Dark Horse was putting these out, I was instantly afraid of still more $50 hardcovers. I mean, this is the company that put perennial quarter bin favorite Nexus into expensive archives, for frak's sake; you could probably complete the run of Nexus for the price of just one of those things. So hearing that they're gonna sell these at a price that may actually put these into people's hands for a change - especially my hands - is nice.

I also enjoyed his statement that Beanworld is easier to read than it is to describe. It is a lot like he said - the various comedic adventures of a tribe trying to keep its food chain alive, but it's also a little about ecology, science, art, love, and the evolution of a society in general. There's a lot going on, and it definitely makes you think, but it's presented in such a way as to be very entertaining and never the heavy-handed hippie parable I've made it sound like just now. laughingsmiley.gif

You know...seeing Bryan in that particular picture.....I think it's been remarked before how much the Hughie character in "The Boys" looks like Bryan? Now doesn't that picture bring to mind a particular scene in a recent issue???? arrowhead.png

btw...I loved Beanworld back in the 90s when I read it...looking forward to revisting it!

I hope it does get in a lot of people's hands; it will be interesting to see how it is accepted in the current market. As Larry pointed out, things are different now, and it shouldn't be seen as 'out there' as is once was, although it is completely unique and of itself.

That being said, I wouldn't mind nice HC's as well...

Bill--can you give us a quick compare/contrast between Beanworld and Fraggle Rock? Sounds like they have some themes in common.

It's really weird when you listen to different opinions on the same people and just showcase how drastically different they can be. I listened to another podcasts last week where somebody called McFarlane (and the were quite serious/adamant) a psychotic.

I tend to love episodes like these that find people with great vantages during the era I started reading comics in.

...and Milk is disgusting and I find it almost unbelievable people can eat real food while drinking it.

Wow, you know, I never thought about it before, but you're right, they do! laughingsmiley.gif

Let me mull it over and get back to you on that one.

Although, Larry did say that McFarlane toys were so good because Todd 'made' the suppliers live up to his expectations (I'm paraphrasing)... I could see this coming off as psychotic, expecially depending on which side you were on. If you are the produder and Todd keeps telling you you've still got it wrong, you're going to eventually say "this guys nuts". 'Course I'm just speculating. At work I often hear 2 sides of a story, and the story is always a bit different depending on who you are talking to. Larry strikes me as the calm level headed one who people need around to keep things on track (with thoughts of Beans dancing in his head smile.gif )

Ever since I did the Cleanse I reduced my milk intake (not dairy, just milk) to just about nil. My asthma for the most part has all but gone away. I haven't used my inhaler because my body has an easier time of healing itself. When I do drink milk - for cereal only - I find that it becomes harder to heal in those times like before the Cleanse. Still don't need my inhaler - but it's uncomfortable.

Milk - it doesn't do MY body good. lol

PS / Larry was a great guest! Glad we were able to get him on.

Peter...how is the show going? We miss ya on CGS man, will you be back to regular duties in a few weeks?

As to the episode, I have to admit at first I thought this was going to be a snoozer because I just really couldn't get excited about Beanworld or listening to Marder's "perspective" on Image; but the 2nd half of the episode was worth waiting for. I nearly lost my shit when Jamie D said he had a picture of Nina Hartley and then Murd coming out of nowhere with a "cum on your brother" line! And if that weren't enough I hear Deemer talking about cow manure in an accent that I can only guess is a spot on Pennsylvania Dutch. I was hurting from laughing so much, and people in Manhattan must have thought I was slightly out of my mind laughing to myself as I walked down the street.

The show is going.... slowly. lol. It's been an interesting process. The show hasn't been done since early 1960 for obvious reasons. They did a reading before this production. They should've done a reading AND a workshop. At the end of the day, this is a full production but it's really a workshop because we're changing lines/songs/etc. daily. It's crazy. We go into tech week next week, we preview on May 30th and we open on June 7th. Show closes on June 22nd with a possible one week extension. I won't be back full time until after that. Although I'm pretty sure I'll be there for Episode 450. I'm not that far away though, I'm still producing the show/sending notes & questions and such. So I'm there in spirit.
