Collected Comics Library Podcast #165

62,253Kb; 66m 08s

http://www.collectedcomicslibrary.com/

Today for the podcast I have a really fun and very informative interview with Todd DePastino author of Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front and editor for Willie and Joe: The World War II Years (Fantagraphics). For decades Mauldin had been the voice of the Greatest Generation through his cartoons particularly with his most famous characters Willie and Joe. Todd and I go in-depth with both the biography and the upcoming cartoon collected edition.

Also in the show I cover a bit of news that I blogged about this past week including Shazam!, American Flagg and Carl Barks and Donald Duck. All this and new sponsor to the podcast, the Library Binding Company, the best place to get all those loose monthly comics bound into a nice hardcover.

Chris,

While I'm not a big fan of all the interviews being done these days on podcasts, I think that this one has to rank up in the top ten podcast interviews that I've ever listened to! If Todd writes as well as he speaks I imagine this is going to be one heck of a book. I almost stopped at a Borders today to buy a copy until I checked Amazon and realized it was cheaper with no tax.

I grew up with Bill Mauldin's political cartoons and I guess it was my dad that told me about his Willie and Joe cartoons. My dad was one of those folks that Todd mentioned that was born in 1929 so he was too young for WWII (although he did serve in the Korean War).

I've got two copies of Up Front (the second one being an old hardback that I found in a used book store) but I'll definitely be on board for the collected Bill Mauldin.

Once again, GREAT job! (Both of you!)

Okay, Chris, I have not listened yet but your timing on this is BRILLIANT!!!

I was just watching a three episode program from 1998 called AMERICA IN THE 40s with my Dad, who is a WWII Vet. Bill Maudlin was one of the featured people they interviewed and they showed some of his cartoons, which I had seen and passed over before. My Father recognized him and his art immediately and I was just thinking I should track down a book on this artist's work. Looks like you've given me some options of books to check out here. Like a lot of Vets, he doesn't boast about his exploits in the war but it does take a little doing to hear that history from him without him getting emotional.

I just got to this episode today. Honestly, the reason I put it off is because I didn't think the subject matter would be that interesting.

Boy was I wrong!

What a great interview! This book sounds incredibly interesting. Both sound great! I many just order both. Mauldin's life sounds fascinating.

Thanks for expanding my horizons, Chris.

They had a couple of copies of Willie and Joe: The World War II Years at my local Barnes & Noble and it is really a beautiful package. If I can free up some shelf space I'll definitely pick one up.

Chris

It's Scott from Classic Comics @ CBR.

I finally got my own ipod, so I'm just getting caught up on all of the great comic book related podcasts out there. They really help pass the time on my streetcar ride into work, and I even listen to 'em at the gym.

I've really been enjoying what I've heard of the CCL podcasts so far, but this one certainly takes the cake.

Todd was a fantastic guest - he really breathed life into the subject matter and his passion for Mauldin's work is evident.

These two books have just shot up to the very top of my want list.

With your permission, I may blog a bit about the interview at my blog and provide a link.

Keep up the good work!

I ordered the Bill Maudlin bio book for my Dad for Father's Day.
I think he'll like it, being a WWII vet himself.
