Howdy fellow artists!

I am in need of a scanner. More specifically, a LARGE scanner. If you are in possession of one that is at least 11" x 14" or (even better) 12" x 18" ... I would love to lay my pages upon its sweet, sweet surface.

I am willing to buy you drinks or dinner or a hooker or whatever your heart desires!

I should mention that I live in New York!

Hey, so if you are a kind soul willing to help a fellow nerd during these dark economic times... dial 1-900-ASPARAGUS and ask for a good time!

Or email me: presspermanent@yahoo.com

You should totally ask Matt Bernier. I bet you he will let you use his scanner. Just ask him! He knows who you are! I don't have his email handy but I'm sure it's on his website or on the internet somewhere. He's a very nice young man, don't be scared of him!

Hey Sabin! I had a massive headache last night and saw this thread this morning. I know it is unlikely you trying to make my head explode, but I thought I'd be on the cautious side and respond.

I do have a scanner. It's been sitting on my desk for months unused because, unfortunately, I don't have the software for it. It's an 11x17 UMax Powerlook II. I don't know much about software sharing sites and stuff. But if you can get me the software, you're more than welcome to come on over, scan, eat my cheetos and hit on my girlfriend. (Just letting you know, I don't think you'll get very far with her, I'm pretty sure she's quite fond of me.)

And congrats on Awesomer! Get crankin' on those pages! (who am I to talk, I still have yet to turn mine in.)

Hi Fred,

It looks like the Umax site's download page has drivers for the Powerlook II. That should theoretically be all you need to run it from photoshop through the "File: Import" menu.

I don't have a large-format scanner myself. I was pricing them recently -- I didn't trust the ultra-cheap Mustek, and even used Epsons were edging towards $800.

You owe it to the universe to scan those pages in ONE PASS!

Dude! Chris! Thanks so much!

I used to have a Mustek, don't have it no more (actually, oddly enough, I don't remember what happened to it). But, if it helps, here's my experience with it:

I mainly used it for BW line drawings. And most of the time, it was fine. Though, as my art progressed and as my brush strokes got thinner and thinner, I noticed the Mustek had a harder time picking up a clean thin line (especially if my line was a bit greywashy). Because of its cheapness, I would recommend it for comic book artists who mostly uses thick brush strokes. But if you think your strokes will be getting really thin and light, you might want to think about investing more in your scanner. I say "might" because it is such a good deal, you may just get it anyway despite your thin line. To be honest, missing some thin lines didn't cause too much of a problem.

The place where the Mustek really lacked was the color scans. I was constantly color correcting and amping colors. And if I had a pic that had really light colors, it had an incredibly hard time getting them. I remember a scan I was doing where my illustration was really faded (that's the way I wanted it to look). It barely picked up color at all. And amping the colors just blotched the whole thing up. If you see yourself doing a good deal of color scanning, I would definitely recommend going with a different scanner. (Though maybe you could get a smaller color scanner, I can't imagine so many of your color scans would be at 11x17.)

Nowadays, I use a scanner at one of my dayjobs, and I love it. It's just simply reliable (and I'm sure somewhat expensive, but maybe not uberly so). I don't remember what it is offhand, but I can let you know if interested.

Hope the scanner hunt treats you alright!

Ah, thanks!!! Fred Chao!

I actually hit up Matt (as per Liz's suggestion) and am going to use his. But the offer of Cheetohs and possible woo-pitching a la menáge-a-chao does up the ante quite a bit!

I probably would not have found the program as my fluency in scanning software is nonexistant. But it sounds like you may have found just what you needed! I feel a Cars song coming on!
